Bayern Munich gets FC Basel in the Champions league knockout stage. This should be interesting…

And it comes to a close

I know I’m a few days late, but I was not impressed with this MLS cup. People are talking about how great and “best” this LA Galaxy team is. I’m thinking far from it. It has taken 3 years under the “Beckham Experiment,” as SI Soccer Analyst Grant Wahl put it, to finally get the MLS Cup final victory (they were there before but ended up losing to Real Salt Lake).

Can I please ask why there is this random love affair everyone with ties to US Soccer has with Landon Donovan?! I still have not see a true goal from this guy since joining MLS. If someone is not gifting him a shot every, single time, then he is simply WORTHLESS! Prime example, not being able to stay in Europe after going on load (did he even play when he was with Bayern Munich?!)

One thing that is looking good though is the fact that Dwayne De Rosario, the 2011 Volkswagen MLS MVP, is making a nice home in the Nation’s Capital. He will be an integral part of this DC United squad after helping them almost make the play offs after years of not seeing post season play. There are a lot of changes that need to come about for DC, but at the same time, this was a VERY VERY young squad that learned throughout the season what you truly needed to do to be successful in MLS. Ben Olsen needs to be given a ton of credit for starting to turn this once proud, now upsetting, squad around and heading in the right direction.

Lots of stuff probably going to be coming out in the near future for both DC United and the Richmond Kickers. For instance, DC plans to unveil their 2012 kit on Monday, November 28 and will include them as being 30% off on Cyber Monday.

I will see what I can do about posting more often. Unfortunately it is the end of my final semester so it may not be until it is all said and done. If anything interesting really happens, though, I will be posting.

Mia san mia!

Teaser!

**UPDATE** Give me another day or so…

Just thought I would put up a teaser post that tomorrow (well since it is 1am, I could say today, but I haven’t gone to bed yet) I will probably sit down and really put in my thoughts on soccer and life in general. It is amazing to me the stories of soccer that are spoken about the players that aren’t in the spotlight, or without a contract with a club for that matter. I will say that after the next post I can clearly say that most play soccer for the love of the game. I will even give my thoughts compared to the big 3 sports in the US (football, basketball and baseball). Heck, I think I will even throw in why some countries succeed in the beautiful game, while others are falling behind.

Sounds like an essay that I would be writing for class, but I just like to talk about soccer and this seems to be the best way possible. Please, if you are reading any of this stuff I post, send me a message, leave a comment. I want to know truly if people are taking a look at the things I have to say.

I always find it interesting that everyone immediately chooses the Spanish teams in all competitions. Seems to be the Germans had been reloading and I think this is their time to start shining! Bayern Munich has a good squad put together and the German National team flew through Euro 2012 qualifying being the first country to qualify for the finals…with another young squad! Here’s to hoping I’m right!

VCU’s Ironic 4:0 Win

Ok so I haven’t posted in almost a month. In that time it was the end of a summer class the start of fall classes, an earthquake, a hurricane, and the end of the Kickers season. But VCU’s 4:0 win over Elon today had me thinking.

VCU was able to pick up a 4:0 win with goals coming from an own goal by Elon, Jason Johnson, Yoram Mwila, and Jose Carlos Castillo. This was a good outing by the Rams who came out somewhat flat in the first half with the only goal being the own goal. The Rams turned on the pressure in the second half with the 3 goals. It is also good to see that 12 of VCU’s 19 shots on goal were on target (which includes a penalty that rattled the crossbar).

Now you are probably asking yourself, I know the Rams are a good team but why was this match ironic? I guess I should mention that with today’s win, the Rams are 4-0-0 now on the season. Now do you see why I said ironic. VCU has wins now, under 2nd year head coach Dave Giffard, against Navy, Georgetown, Richmond and now Elon. The Rams get a week to rest and recuperate before heading out on the road for the Coastal Carolina tournament. You can also note that the Rams take on a Coastal Carolina team (also University of South Carolina-Upstate but they aren’t apart of this note) that gained a 10:1 win over Richmond during the VCU Tournament.

The Rams are off to a great start for an early season. With this momentum, I don’t think the conference was exactly ready for the action VCU is going to bring (and who cares about W&M’s #8 ranking). RAM IT!

Fest Success…Now for the Road

The Kickers walked away Saturday after a 3:0 win over Dayton in front of a record breaking 4742 fans and with the 2011 Family Fest. William Yomby got on the scoresheet first with a 24th minute shot from a cross by Nozomi Hiroyama. 6 minutes later the dangerous Matthew Delicâte heads in a cross from Stanley Nyazamaba. Nyazamba had to cut 3 times on his way towards the end line to get the cross over the the awaiting Delicâte. The team took the 2:0 lead into halftime. The final Kickers goal came in the 54th minute in the form of a penalty that is put away by Delicâte. Jamel Wallace was the player that was brought down in the box to draw the penalty.

From here the team goes on the road to both Wilmington and LA (twice). Winning out the rest of the matches (and probably some other help along the way) will allow for the Kickers to pick up a home playoff match.

Don’t forget that the Kickers must travel to the Chicago Fire (MLS) on August 30th for the US Open Cup Semi-Final. Richmond has defeated both the Columbus Crew and Sporting Kansas City 2:0 in both matches to get to this point.

Richmond Kickers Final Home Match

The season is nearing the end. It has been an incredible time I have spent with this club running it’s social media for this season. I feel like I have made the best of my time and wish it didn’t have to end.

The team itself has not seen it’s best for lately, most recently dropping 3 points at Pittsburgh, but they return home to close out the season versus the Dayton Dutch Lions. The Kickers have faced the team on three other occasions this season winning all three 6:0, 4:1 (USOC) and 3:1. This is a must win for the team who need to pick up the 3 points before taking road trips to Wilmington and LA (twice). Hopefully I will get a chance to say more before Saturday at 7pm!

Just saw rumors of the New York Red Bulls possible interests in German striker Miroslav Klose. All I can say is, they better not. I am seriously hoping that Klose comes to the realization of how horrible of an idea that is and decides that the Nation’s capital and DC United are a much better fit.

What a day for Liverpool fans. After losing Fernando Torres to Chelsea, Liverpool gained its revenge with a 1-0 win (and season sweep) over Chelsea. Great goal by Raul Meireles to put Liverpool on top of Chelsea. With the win the once relegation threatened Liverpool have now moved up to 6th in the Premier League and their eyes set on a Champions League berth. How does it feel to make the move now Mr. Torres?
